UISpec is a Behavior Driven Development framework for the iPhone that provides a full automated testing solution that drives the actual iPhone UI. It is modeled after the very popular RSpec for Ruby.

To make finding specific views in the iPhone UI easy, UISpec includes a very powerful view traversal DSL called UIQuery. Not only can you easily traverse the view hierarchy, you can also interact with the views you find.

The files for the reusable Software Management Plan (SMP) tool consist of the text for a reusable Software Management Plan and an on-line help tool to be used under Microsoft Windows.

A – To use the tool under windows, follow these installation instructions:

1 – Start Windows
2 – Place disk in drive A (or B)
3 – From the Windows Program Manager select the menu item FILE
4 – Select the submenu item Run …
5 – type A:Setup (or B:Setup if disk is in drive B) and then
press the Enter key. The SMP tool will be installed automatically.  To use the tool to create a Software Management Plan:

1 – Start the SMP tool by double clicking the SMP Help icon.
2 – Start your windows word processor (WORD or WordPerfect)
3 – Open the appropriate template: either Plan.doc, Plan.wp5 or Plan.txt
4 – Edit the plan in order to tailor it to your project, saving the
edited plan with a new name.

B – If you are not using the tool, simply use the reusable document SMPlan.doc (in Word for Windows) or the file SMPlan.txt in any other word processor.

There are many tools like Mockups, GUI Prototyping, Wireframing and other buzzwords like that, but the point is to improve user interface quality and usability.  Some of these tools are enterprise ready, some are in the early level of development with many issues and finally some of them are in the middle.  Today I want to write about the one which is the middle class representative, named FlairBuilder.  Let’s draw the short review, but first explore some basic requirements for such systems.

Usability

Why we are using wireframing, mockups?  Because we want to create high usability user interface.  Yes, but how to do that with poor usability tool?  Must be clear, fast, predictable and all the other adjectives regarding proper GUI design.

Presentation

The system must allow online mock-ups presentation, using a separate, free player: html files, flash presentations or screenshots.

Components

Should have a large set of components, but divided into groups.  Easy to find and with group of last used and favorites.  Necessarily include place holders.

Interactions

Must contain a set number of basic events: click, mouseover, etc.

Be online

Easy download, easy install and autoupdate.  Fine website with fresh info.

HATE is a test harness, a program that is intended to take the tedium out of testing and evaluating programs.

Some effort has been taken to ensure that HATE is totally independent of both the program being tested and the series of tests to be applied to the test program.  The intention is to provide a single tool that may be used for both testing and evaluation; to encourage well-designed objective testing; and, by allowing researchers to apply the same sets of tests to their own programs, to make it easy for researchers to compare techniques on an informed basis.

The major features of HATE are:

HATE is written in a high-level scripting language and may be used unchanged on any platform that the language supports.  This includes all flavours of Unix; Linux; Windows NT, 95, 3. n ; and the Macintosh.

Test scripts may be used unchanged on all platforms.

Test scripts are independent of the software being tested or evaluated.

Programs are interfaced to HATE by means of a short interface procedure ; thereafter, all relevant existing test scripts may be used with them.

The decomposition into test script and interface procedure, and the portablity of HATE, encourage the sharing of scripts between developers or researchers.

HATE is able to generate its output in a range of forms, including HTML and LaTeX tables.

HATE was developed principally to aid the evaluation of computer vision algorithms . There is increasing realization within the vision research community that this type of work is essential in converting computer vision from a “black art“, with algorithms being tested on only a few images, to sound engineering practice. It is hoped that the vision community will develop test scripts that allow comprehensive comparisons of existing algorithms to be performed, and that new algorithms are subsequently compared with the existing body of results.

Lightweight Test Automation Framework is an integration testing tool, which works by scripting the web browser to perform a sequence of actions against your application’s UI – entering text and clicking links and buttons exactly as a real user would – and then checking that the expected results can be seen in the browser window.

Just in case you don’t know the difference between unit testing and integration testing:

Unit tests work against the API of a particular component in your code.  Ideally, they test only that single isolated unit (hence the name), which allows them to pinpoint any problems exactly where they occur.  Unit testing tools for .NET include NUnit, mbUnit, and xUnit.
